I came across an inter­est­ing arti­cle on the Syd­ney Morn­ing Her­ald web­site (Click) which dis­cusses the poten­tial ugly side of enter­ing com­pe­ti­tions. When­ever enter­ing a com­pe­ti­tion I’m quick to check the terms and con­di­tions which state the rights I may retain if enter­ing the com­pe­ti­tion. Such com­pe­ti­tions which trans­fer the copy­right to the organ­i­sa­tion occur regard­less of you win­ning the com­pe­ti­tion or not. Is it really worth it sometimes?

It’s a grow­ing occurence for many who soon learn after enter­ing a com­pe­ti­tion that their image copy­right was trans­ferred to the com­peti­ton owner which is obvi­ously frus­trat­ing. At the end of the day it really is the big organ­i­sa­tions being the real win­ners as their image library expands which would have oth­er­wise costed millions.
