Canon 5D Mark II Rumor (September 8 Release)

Canon 5D Mark II rumors

I just noticed this over on DPreview and there seems to be a constant interest of google search engine traffic regarding the Canon 5D Mark II so this is for those interested. Boy this guy will look a douche if it’s not actually released and he wasn’t ‘105% accurate’.

Pictures soon :)

Here is the latest correct information about the upcoming 5D MkII. Don’t bother arguing because this information is 105% accurate. Here we go.

- Will be announced Monday, September 8, 2008
- MSRP: $2,399.95 (SSP: $2,199.95), body only
- 16MP FF sensor
- 6 FPS
- Max ISO 25,600 (for what it’s worth…it’s more for marketing)
- Full weather sealing

- VGA-resolution display (from same supplier Sony uses for their new Handycams, except in 4:3 aspect ratio here)

- Pop-up flash
- Anti-dust features
- NO Live View
- NO pro AF from 1D (although all points are cross-type)
- NO video mode whatsoever (silliest rumor I’ve ever heard)
- NO compatibility with EF-S lenses (physically impossible anyway)
- NO electronic crop mode for faster shot rate
- NO HDMI-out
- NO UDMA CF support

As you can see, it’s by no means ground-breaking. It’s not going to out-do the Nikon D700 in performance or features (although overall IQ will be very close or indistinguishable). But it will be significantly cheaper. It’s aimed at the more “manual” shooter.

Original 5D will continue to be sold at $1,799.95 (SSP) without any rebates until stock is depleted.

Canon won’t have a revolutionary product for almost another year from now.

My friend is an elf and his boss gets early information and shipments in order to prepare for the holiday season.

  1. Why would the 5D MkII have a 4:3 screen? Or is he talking about the screen on the Handycam there?

  2. I am actually quite happy with my 5D except the full weather seal. So, anything that the new replacement is welcome but not essential to my work, though I think weather seal will be a must as more and more ‘cheaper’ cameras offer weather proof bodies.

Today, I read the new 50D and it seems that the new replacement will have Digi IV processor, UDMA support and Liveview and definitely a higher ISO range and pixel count.

I can’t wait and I do and I mean, I DO HOPE THAT CANON PUT PROPER WEATHER SEAL on the new 5D… finger crossed.

Very true apart from IQ - The current 5D has a better IQ than the D700 and D3 and that’s before an upgrade to a larger sensor. Yes the nikon cameras are better in every other respect, higher ISO, faster, better weather sealing etc, etc, etc but not on IQ. Go look at Ken Rockwells website (a nikon man) - the proof is all there. So for us landscape photographers using tripods, low ISO settings, no need for 10fps etc, but the need for best possible IQ, the Mk11 5D will blow away the D700 and D3. My point is - different cameras for different applications - choose the one which best fits your own type of photography

  5. I think the specs he gave might be incorrect. From the latest rumor I heard it’s going to be between 16 and 21 megapixels. DIGIC IV chip. Similar stats to the newly released 50D but FF. Again these are just rumors, but that guy from DPReview…I saw his posting back in July or something so his info might be really out of date…even though its just speculation haha.

I think too many people are worried about it not being better then Nikon. Who cares really? Nikon took 3 years to out do the Canon EOS 5D, that already goes to show that Canon users are in good hands.

AND Nikon just started releasing tilt shift lenses earlier this year, come on, Canon has had 3 T/S lenses since before way back. All Nikon is doing is playing the catch up game. Canon shouldn’t be expected to be better every year all the time, that’s just not fair and that would mean there was no competition if C was always better then N.

  7. SJ’2 21MP information was deemed a hoax (the guy who wrote it even said he was joking). Alex Wise’s information (this article) is outdated from early July but DPReview writer really has an inside scoop or he’s just been extremely lucky in the past. The 16MP “brand-new sensor design” spec is regarded as the most accurate information out there (look how many people praise the OP). And now we’re seeing that Canon is announcing a revolution in sensor design. This is as real as it gets. Digic III is gone–the next 5D will have Digic IV but not sure if it’s 1 or 2 chips (anyone have an idea if 1 Digic IV will handle that framerate?). I’m excited, and at $2,400 it’s definitely within reach of many people.
