Canon 7D Release
Posted by Alex on September 1, 2009
The Canon 7D has finally been released! I remember reading rumours of this affordable body long before the Canon 5D Mark II was even released so it’s about time..
From dpreview:
As anticipated Canon has today announced the EOS 7D digital SLR. It boasts a new 18MP CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 4 processors, ISO range expandable to 12800, continuous shooting at 8 fps and full HD video recording. It also incorporates a new viewfinder with 1.0x magnification and 100% coverage and a 3 inch LCD with 920k dot resolution.
The EOS 7D is also the first EOS to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level – in the viewfinder and on the LCD – that indicates both pitch and roll angles. This feature is particularly useful when shooting landscapes to ensure a level horizon, or when used in conjunction with a Tilt and Shift lens to level the camera.”
I’ve followed this release with interest as it was something I would’ve considered if released more closer to the 5D mark II. By the looks of it a very nice release and puts Canon back on the playing field a bit more with a competitive Nikon.
What are your thoughts on the release? Will you be buying?

As a new owner of the 5D Mk2, I won’t be buying but sounds a nice camera.
The new additions are not anything I particularly need ie 8fps and tilt shift options.
I does sound as though it is geared more towards the landscape photographer.
My main considerations for any future models would be enhanced focussing options.

I’m with you Marc. Whilst it’s a nice release I have no regret in my purchase of the 5D Mark II and would have probably gone it over the new 7D. Nice to see something hopefully a little more affordable though.

I bought a 50D last year, but the 7D is looking like a pretty appealing upgrade, as it should be significantly cheaper than the 5D mk II (estimated cost is around AUD$2K).

I’m in love with my 5D Mark II, but I will definitely be using the 7D as a backup camera (rather than the 40D). I’m excited to see the new focus system! Even the 5D is sometimes unreliable in the dark.
