According to Canon Rumors, the Canon 5D Mark II replacement is due for release sometime around Q1 or Q2 2011. I must admit, I’ll be very surprised if it does come out around then. The Canon 5D Mark II is still a very capable and adapt camera that in my opinion only requires minor rather then significant changes. But that being said if the past life cycles of the Canon 5D and Mark II are anything to go by then it does seem likely to expect a release for sometime mid to late next year.
Feature Wishlist
Some of these aren’t likely but it’s nice to dream.
- Better weather sealing. I realise the current Canon 5D Mark II does handle itself quite well in weather conditions but it would be nice to have weather sealing to that similar of the 1D professional series. Whether Canon would bring this into it’s non professional bodies is questionable as it is an obvious selling point for the professional series.
- Built in intervalometer similar to that implemented in Nikon bodies.
- Built in GPS tracker After all, this camera is very popular with landscape photographers.
- Additional video features. I’ll admit I don’t play with the video mode all that often but it would be nice to have the ability to access higher FPS, in camera time lapse feature and also not being constrained to one video format.
- *Social media accessibility from your camera. I’m kidding.
- Less noise at higher ISO. Rather then adding ridiculous ISO capabilities (25,600), let’s just focus on perfecting what we already have.
- More auto focus (AF) points. I was quite disappointed with the AF point coverage of the Canon 5D Mark II and would love to see a lot more in a future release.
- *3D capabilities.
- Improvements to the screen. I’ll admit, the screen is quite amazing but further improving the quality and increasing the size of this would be a nice addition.
- Dual memory slots. With the increasing size of pictures and now videos, it’s time for dual memory slots similar to that seen in the 1D professional series bodies.
*Yes.. I’m being sarcastic about 3D capabilities and social media accessibility.
Will I be upgrading? Doubtful unless the changes are significant. For me upgrading from the Canon 350D to the Canon 5D Mark II was an easy choice but justifying upgrading from a Canon 5D Mark II to a III will be difficult. For this reason it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t see a release until 2012. Are users really in a rush for a replacement of this body? I’m not.

I dont know what Canon are quite up too at the moment, whether they are semi dropping off their current range for a total revamp + new numbering + system in the near future… the whole 60D debarcle really confused me a lot.
A lot of 5D MKii users I speak too already say that 21mp is too much.. I cannot imagine 28.. that is just unbelievable… think of the processing power and the amount of mass storage you will need to have on hand just to be able to edit shots.
I think the no.1 priority should be fixing up the AF on it and upgrade the Weather Sealing as you mentioned.
Having said that.. they feel great in the hand and you take some wonderful images with yours wisie.. they are a decent bit of kit!

I’d love to see the Mk III come out with some of the convenience and video features of the newer models. For instance, the grid overlay in the viewfinder of the 7D would be critical for shooters like me who do a lot of architecture. Right now I just use a viewfinder screen replacement with the gridlines, but that sort of thing should be electronic. I’m also drooling over the 60D’s ability to tag photos with star ratings. Because these carry over to workflow software, they would be a huge timesaver when hunting for that favorite shot hours later. That articulating screen on the 60D is pretty swanky too, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Thanks for stopping by Kevin. I’d hope that such features that are already present in newer models will be automatically implemented. We can only hope!

i am using 5d and very happy with 14mp and still all of my pictures i have to resize. even 5d mk2 for me i think 21mp is still too high.
if possible what i am expect on new 5d mk3 is
* 16-18mp
* better noise in raw file (not noise deduction on jpeg) close to nikon d3s if possible
* AF 19 points all cross type, and able to select multiple zone group eg up down left right
* 6fps or higher
* 2 card slot (2cf, 2sd, 1cf + 1sd is ok)
* full hd 1920×1080 24p 50p 60p mode
* lighter weight

I actually wrote on my wishlist for the 5d Mark III too. I use the video mode a decent amount, so most of my requests are related to video functionality. Thanks for the post, and I’d love to have you stop by my blog!

How about implementing eye control focus as Canon has done in the film camera EOS 3? Although the 5D & 5DII does not have a flash the series III could add one but that would take away from the cinema/film attraction or would be snubbed by the pros.
The dual media slots in the Nikon D7000 was a nice addition. Could Canon possibly support multiple media card formats and possibly direct stills to one card while video to the other? How about wireless or blutooth transfer of files? Given the potential size of the files I doubt that would be practical but potentially the ability to directly interface with portable external USB2 or USB3 hard drives would turn heads if it could be handled in camera without extra, optional equipment.
Most shocking would be if Canon would do so at an attractive price point.

I wish the 5d III would have a pop flash that could control off camera flash like with the Nikon CLS (creative lighting system), or some other way of controlling off camera flash without added attachments. It’s not a necessity, but when shooting w/Nikon I’ve found this to be handy in a pinch when you don’t want to fumble around with Pocket Wizards and what not. Also, I wish it came in pink…definitely kidding.
