I just noticed this over on DPreview and there seems to be a constant interest of google search engine traffic regarding the Canon 5D Mark II so this is for those interested. Boy this guy will look a douche if it’s not actually released and he wasn’t ‘105% accurate’.

Here is the latest correct information about the upcoming 5D MkII. Don’t bother arguing because this information is 105% accurate. Here we go.

- Will be announced Monday, September 8, 2008
- MSRP: $2,399.95 (SSP: $2,199.95), body only
- 16MP FF sensor
- 6 FPS
- Max ISO 25,600 (for what it’s worth…it’s more for marketing)
- Full weather sealing

- VGA-resolution display (from same supplier Sony uses for their new Handycams, except in 4:3 aspect ratio here)

- Pop-up flash
- Anti-dust features
- NO Live View
- NO pro AF from 1D (although all points are cross-type)
- NO video mode whatsoever (silliest rumor I’ve ever heard)
- NO compatibility with EF-S lenses (physically impossible anyway)
- NO electronic crop mode for faster shot rate
- NO HDMI-out
- NO UDMA CF support

As you can see, it’s by no means ground-breaking. It’s not going to out-do the Nikon D700 in performance or features (although overall IQ will be very close or indistinguishable). But it will be significantly cheaper. It’s aimed at the more “manual” shooter.

Original 5D will continue to be sold at $1,799.95 (SSP) without any rebates until stock is depleted.

Canon won’t have a revolutionary product for almost another year from now.

It’s that time again where we speculate more about the Canon 5D mark II, Canon 3D, Canon 4D or whatever you want to call it.

Recently I’ve been noticing rumors which predict the body plus other bits may be coming sooner then many are predicting with a release on August 26, 2008. Even some speculating that we may also get a new Canon 1D series body, the Canon 1D MarkIIIn.  I haven’t really followed Canon 1D MarkIIIn rumors because I’m a poor uni student and it’s beyond my reach, for now. Based on the image below which shows releases from 2001-2008 I do believe the 1D MarkIIIn will be more likely to be released in 2009 however Canon is full of suprises so who knows.

But this post wouldn’t be complete without Canon 5D Mark II specification rumor. According to northlight-images.co.uk Canon Canada have been the following specifications for the Canon 5D Mark 2 which sound very possible with the price tag leaving open a Canon 6D which may be a more expensive higher megapixel body as $1,899 is cheap!

Feature wise this seems alright but I’d love some weather sealing but will the Canon 5D Mark II actually have weather sealing which many are predicting? I’m not sure as weather sealing may be what differentiates the professional series to the prosumer/amateur consumer bodies.♦

Photography Monthly (UK magazine) have added to rumors that the Canon 5D replacement will be 16MP, Digic III Live view, 3″ screen and weather sealing. Realistically it’s doubtful this article has any credibility as they were probably informed by the same websites which I’ve linked to in the past but the features do seem realistic and I couldn’t see why Canon wouldn’t deliver them.

Just a few snippets from the article which caught my attention

Canon’s most low-light capable model to date. The sequel is now thought to have a new 16-megapixel, full-frame sensor that supports up to ISO 25,600

The camera would lack the live previews on its LCD that are present on the Rebel series but would make up for it through an extra-sharp display: the screen would have a VGA (640×480) resolution that would help in reviewing shots. Other additions would include continuous shooting at six frames per second as well as an enclosure fully sealed against rain and other splashes.

The rumor has yet to be corroborated and contradicts earlier reports, but is unusually detailed and estimates that the new 5D variant would launch on September 8th for $2,400 in a body-only kit, falling in line with the advent of the Photokina expo in Germany the same month.

I’ve always been under the impression that Canon will bring it late year around Photokina but I disagree with the rumour and believe the body will have live-view. It’s almost like the rumour was written by a Nikon fan boy to frustrate Canon users?

It appears any discussion related to the Canon 5D Mark ii is met with quite a bit of interest on google from search engine type in traffic so I’m using this as an index for any discussion in posts which has been made that may be of interest. It’s definitely clear that everyone is quite eagerly awaiting the announcement with many rumors getting about. It will be especially interesting to see the reaction when the announcement is finally made as no doubt it won’t suit everyone. I’ve noticed some far fetched specifications which predict the body to have specifications which are far superior to any current 1D body which seems absurd as it somewhat defeats the purpose of Canon having the 1D series if they are going to come out and release a body which has all the features + more? However could we even see a new 1D series body released at the same time as the market is given a (somewhat) affordable full-frame camera whilst also having the option for the professional more expensive body of a 1D. It would be nice and quite possible for Canon to follow what has been successful in the past by having the 400D and also the 40D with one being more affordable however a little different in features, time shall tell.
