It’s fair to say 2009 was the year of the long exposures for me. I’ve had a lot of fun with the Canon 5D Mark II and B+W 110 filter over the year and looking back am surprised how many photographs I actually took.
I hope 2009 was a good year for your photography!

A quick clip messing around with the Canon 5D Mark II whilst making my morning coffee a month or two ago. The video is a tad perfectionist, all that for a cup of coffee you say but it’s worth it. I don’t think vimeo allows HD on external websites so you may have to hit the HD button. This is the first and only time I’ve played with the video mode as my computer is terribly under powered but an upgrade is along the way, hopefully more soon..
For something different pictures of my recent home diy coffee roasting with a popcorn popper. How did it go? Good but the beans are way over roasted and any longer they would of been black which isn’t so cool haha but that’s expected. I became interested with roasting coffee through the coffeesnobs forum where many people seem to be doing it to enjoy freshly roasted beans (obviously) but also save a few bucks. Through buying green beans through coffeesnobs you’re looking at around $25 per 2.5kg, if bought roasted it’s around $35~ in most places so there’s some money to be saved.

Wayy over roasted! Notice the black patches? Bin for these I think

It’s so cold at the moment, 7 degrees for most of the day until it warms to a scorching 10 degrees. To keep warm I love my daily fix of coffee as I read of the problems encoutered by less developed countries who receive hazardous waste for quick financial gains. The reading is not by choice but for an essay but fourtunately it’s not too boring as my playlist of downtempo music like tosca, kruder & dorfmeister and blah adds a nice background tune.
This was shot with my Canon 350D, Canon 50 1.8 (nifty fifty) of a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine with freshly ground indonesian beans.
Any Australian student readers may be interested in this website which offers discounted magazine subscriptions. I’m deciding whether to subscribe to the economist at the moment, decisions.. (Click)

From time to time I like to make small updates about little things which I’ve learnt about my Rancilio Silvia and make a small post for anyone trolling around google. As such the relevant shots for each article aren’t taken for artistic merit but just to jazz things up a little so excuse my dirty machine and dribble
Anthony at Ace Tampers has recently introduced an affordable range of tampers, great for any coffee snob. Mine arrived last week and has proved to make a huge difference in comparison to the crappy plastic tamper which Rancilio provide when you order your Silvia. The plastic tamper which you receive doesn’t properly fit which in turn can affect over or under extraction. I can’t recommend an after-market tamper enough as it properly fits my basket now and pours have improved dramatically.

Roasted coffee beans mmm
Coffee is another expensive hobby of mine which kills my wallet but it’s worth it
In the foreground are Oomph! JavaJo coffee beans which are just amazing. These are ground with a Rancilio Rocky while a Rancilio Silvia does the rest.
Canon 350D, Canon 50 nifty fifty

My new found obsession.. The Rancilio Silvia and Rocky grinder have arrived and am slowly getting the hang of it
Shot with the Canon 50 1.8 nifty fifty mmmm!
(yes, average pour)
